Why does Room 58 want to manage your DNS?
We now utilise AWS load balancing technology to ensure better uptime and better security for your website. Because of this, the A records for the load balancer change regularly (usually most weeks), so we cannot simply provide a set of A records to use.
We take advantage of Route 53 which allows us to point websites to the load balancer which takes care of the DNS for us.
I wish to continue to manage my DNS; what options are available to me?
There are a few options available, depending on what your DNS supports.
a) Create an ANAME record for your domain to point to a record we supply. An ANAME record isn't available with all providers and essentially works by getting your DNS provider to automate the creation of A records on your behalf. An example provider who supports this is DNSMadeEasy.
b) Use a CNAME proxy (sometimes called CNAME flattening). This works in a very similar way to the ANAME record method listed above. An example provider who supports this is CloudFlare.
c) You point the www CNAME record to an entry we give you. You then point your main domain A record to an IP address you control. You then create a HTML redirect to https://www.{MYDOMAIN.COM} (replacing with your domain name). You will also need to set up an SSL certificate on this webserver yourself to ensure it is secure. We will need to tweak a setting at our end if you wish to use this approach.
If you are unable to do any of the 3 options above, we strongly recommend allowing us to look after your DNS for you. We promise to make any DNS changes within 24 hours, should the need arise.
